Columbus, OH – AMLE announced today that Dr. Michell Bauml, Dr. Victoria Davis Smith, and Dr. Brooke Blevins have received the 2023 Tom Erb Outstanding Article Award. The award reinforces AMLE’s ongoing commitment to supporting the advancement of the field of middle level education through peer-reviewed research. Each year, the Association recognizes an outstanding article published in one of AMLE’s two journals, Research in Middle Level Education Online (RMLE) and Middle School Journal (MSJ). The Tom Erb Outstanding Article Award is named in honor of Tom Erb, a prolific author, stanch advocate for middle level education, and former editor of both MSJ and RMLE.
The authors are being recognized for their RMLE article, “’Who Cares?’: Young Adolescents’ Perceived Barriers to Civic Action.” The article explored ways in which 47 young adolescents described barriers they perceive to civic action in their schools and communities. Their findings revealed that participants believed they were capable of making a difference in their communities. Key obstacles identified by students included partnerships with peers/adults, peers’ reluctance to exercise civic duty, social-emotional factors, and lack of resources. The authors will be celebrated at AMLE50: The 50th Annual Conference for Middle Level Education this November in National Harbor, Maryland.
