COLUMBUS, OH – The Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) is pleased to announce the selection of Ellis Hurd, Ed.D., as SPA Coordinator for Middle Level Teacher Preparation and Licensure/Certification. Currently professor of middle level and bilingual education in the School of Teaching and Learning at Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois, Hurd has more than 20 years of teaching experience in diverse settings across Illinois and Iowa.
Ellis is co-editor of Middle School Journal and has published on a variety of teacher education, identity and equity, and bilingual topics. He is editor of The Reflexivity of Pain and Privilege: Auto-Ethnographic Collections of Mixed Identity; and co-editor of Equity and Cultural Responsiveness in the Middle Grades. He also served as former chair and a member of the Collaborating Sites Network (CSN) Advisory Committee for the International Congress for Qualitative Inquiry (ICQI) and the International Association of Qualitative Inquiry (IAQI).
“I am honored to be appointed as the AMLE SPA Coordinator. I am passionate about middle level teacher preparation and licensure/certification. I have a shared vision for this important work as we continue to build on the foundations we have while also charting new pathways into the future,” said Hurd.
In his role as SPA Coordinator for Middle Level Teacher Preparation and Licensure/Certification, Hurd will coordinate all aspects of the national review of middle level teacher preparation programs and serve as the official liaison between AMLE and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Additionally, he will coordinate the revision of the AMLE Middle Level Teacher Preparation Standards, recruit and train members of the AMLE Board of Program Reviewers, and serve as an ex-officio member of the AMLE Professional Preparation Advisory Committee.
