For Immediate Release

October 8, 2024

Columbus, OH – AMLE announced today that Dr. Ting Huang, Dr. Jing Zhou, Si Chen, and Emerson Barnet have received the 2024 Tom Erb Outstanding Article Award. The award reinforces AMLE’s ongoing commitment to supporting the advancement of the field of middle level education through peer-reviewed research.  Each year, the Association recognizes an outstanding article published in one of AMLE’s two journals, Research in Middle Level Education Online (RMLE) and Middle School Journal (MSJ). The Tom Erb Outstanding Article Award is named in honor of Tom Erb, a prolific author, stanch advocate for middle level education, and former editor of both MSJ and RMLE.

The authors are being recognized for their August 2023 MSJ article, “’I’m concerned about actually doing it’: The struggles of pre-service teachers becoming change agents.” The article found that pre-service teachers need more support from teacher education programs on their teaching practice for the social justice issues in addition to theoretical training. AMLE members can read the article in its entirety online.

“I am deeply honored that our article has been selected for the 2024 Tom Erb Outstanding Article Award,” said Dr. Ting Huang, the articles lead author, “This research reflects our commitment to addressing the challenges pre-service teachers face in becoming change agents and providing them with actionable strategies to navigate these complexities. I am incredibly grateful to have worked alongside such talented co-authors—Dr. Zhou, Si, and Emerson—who each brought unique insights and dedication to this work. This award recognizes not just our efforts, but the importance of equipping future educators with the tools they need to inspire change. Thank you to the Association for Middle Level Education for this remarkable recognition.”

The authors will be celebrated at AMLE24: The 51st Annual Conference for Middle Level Education this November in Nashville, Tennessee.
