About the Hosts
David C. Virtue is the Taft B. Botner Distinguished Professor of Middle Grades Education at Western Carolina University. He is the editor of AMLE’s research journal, Research in Middle Level Education Online; the founding editor of the AMLE Innovations in Middle Level Education Research book series; and a member of AMLE’s Research Advisory Committee. His recent works include Dialogues in Middle Level Education Research Volume 1 (2022) and Volume 2 (2023), Middle Level Teacher Preparation across International Contexts (2022, coedited with Ellerbrock and Main), and The International Handbook of Middle Level Education Theory, Research, and Policy (2020).
Andrew Maxey is the Director of Strategic Initiatives for Tuscaloosa City Schools (Alabama) and is a member of AMLE’s Board of Trustees. He is a founding board member, past president, and currently serves as the treasurer of the Alabama Association for Middle Level Education. Elephant in the Classroom is his research-based “snapshot of the complexity of teaching.” When he is not writing or spending unapologetically silly time with his wife and three young adolescents, he is usually making something out of damaged or reclaimed wood.
