Fighting Censorship and Promoting Diversity: Advocating for Middle Level Learners’ Access to Books
Presenter: Carolyn Carlson
Books are routinely banned from public schools, restricting middle level learners’ abilities to read and reflect upon texts depicting all types of ideas and people – including ones like themselves and unlike themselves. This will be an informative presentation with numerous examples of banned/challenged books that will provide participants with new insight into censorship, its negative and real-world impact on racism, bullying, discrimination, etc., and how to become advocates in their own schools.
